Abstract

B. R. Ambedkar developed a profound and practical vision of democracy and constitutionalism that continues to influence the foundations of modern India. He did not restrict democracy to elections or political representation; instead, he viewed it as a way of life grounded in liberty, equality, and fraternity. These ideals, inspired by the French Revolution, were reinterpreted to address the deep-rooted social inequalities of Indian society. He strongly emphasized that political democracy can remain stable only when it is supported by social and economic democracy. This article examines his ideas with particular attention to the critique of the caste system, which he identified as the greatest obstacle to equality and democratic development. Through major works such as Annihilation of Caste and States and Minorities, he argued for the complete removal of caste-based discrimination and advocated measures like social reform, affirmative action, and state intervention to achieve justice for marginalized communities. The study also highlights his contribution to constitutionalism, especially his role in shaping a constitutional framework that balances individual rights with social responsibilities. His emphasis on Fundamental Rights, rule of law, separation of powers, and judicial review reflects a deep commitment to safeguarding citizens from arbitrary state authority. A key aspect of this vision is the concept of constitutional morality, which stresses the importance of respecting constitutional values, institutions, and democratic procedures.Furthermore, the article explores his concern for minority rights and efforts to ensure inclusive participation in governance. He believed that democracy must protect weaker sections and prevent the domination of the majority. His insistence on constitutional methods and peaceful change highlights a commitment to stability and democratic order. In the contemporary context, these ideas remain highly relevant in addressing issues such as social inequality, caste discrimination, and challenges to constitutional values. This vision provides both a moral foundation and a practical framework for strengthening democracy and promoting an inclusive and just society.
